Health and Wellness Overview

The Johnston Public School District is committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and healthy learning environment for all students. Our Health and Wellness initiatives are designed to promote academic success by supporting students’ physical health, social-emotional well-being, and overall development.

This document outlines the district’s Health and Wellness Mission, aligned policies, and key resources available to students, staff, and families. It highlights our district-wide approach to nutrition, physical activity, social-emotional learning (SEL), mental health supports, suicide awareness and prevention, bullying prevention, and family engagement.

Guided by state mandates and Rhode Island General Laws, the Johnston Public Schools Health and Wellness Committee works collaboratively to ensure these efforts reflect best practices and the needs of our school community. The information and links included here provide access to policies, standards, programs, and community partnerships that support lifelong wellness and informed decision-making for all students.

Introducing the Virtual Calming Room

As part of our commitment to social-emotional wellness, the district offers a Virtual Calming Room—an online space designed to help students manage stress and emotions in healthy ways. This resource includes tools such as calming music and sounds, yoga, visual relaxation, mindfulness activities, creative coloring options, fun exercises, and even an animal cam for moments of peaceful distraction. The Virtual Calming Room supports students in building skills to regulate stress and develop coping strategies they can use anytime they need a break or moment of calm. You can explore this resource and the different calming activities on the district’s Virtual Calming Room website.
