Scott Sutherland was appointed Superintendent of Johnston Public Schools in August 2025 after more than two decades of educational leadership in Rhode Island. He previously served as Chief of Staff for Providence Public Schools, where he managed the daily operations of 36 schools and expanded Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities across the district.

As a turnaround principal at Hope High School and Mount Pleasant High School where he was named Rhode Island Principal of the Year and later at Central High School, Mr. Sutherland led NEASC accreditation recoveries, launched innovative CTE pathways in partnership with colleges and universities, and guided major school improvement and capital projects. He also advanced statewide initiatives such as robotics, eSports, and workforce development programs recognized by Governor Dan McKee.

Superintendent Sutherland is committed to making Johnston a destination district for families by fostering academic excellence, equity, and opportunity. His vision is to ensure every student graduates prepared for success in college, career, and life.
