The Johnston School Department Curriculum. A Time of Transitioning

The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and 34 other state departments of education, as well as the Johnston Public Schools, are participating in a federal education initiative called Race To The Top (RTTT).

This initiative involves a transition from curriculum based on Rhode Island Standards to curriculum based on Common Core State Standards, which will be followed by all states involved in Race To The Top.

Also, students' grade level knowledge of these standards will no longer be based on the New England Comprehensive Assessment Program (NECAP). Once this new curriculum transition is completed, assessing student progress towards grade level proficiency the teacher will have the student using a testing instrument called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).
