Welcome back to school. Hopefully you are all well rested and have enjoyed quality vacation time over the summer. As we look forward to a new school year, many exciting projects are taking place in our district. It’s been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with all of you and your children as I know you share the goal of creating an exemplary school system and that our students meet high academic and social standards. Thank you for your support in making Johnston Schools a community to be proud of. I would also like to thank and commend our School Committee for always placing our students’ best interests at the center of their decisions and our administrators, teachers and staff for the work they do every day as they offer our students a quality educational experience.
The following are some updates for the 2017-2018 school year.
Please note that we have adjusted our school calendar. Students return to school on Wednesday August 30th. There is no school for students on Thursday, March 29th, the day before the Good Friday recess. Johnston continues to have the traditional February vacation this year. The updated calendar can be found on the Johnston Schools Website (www.johnstonschools.org).
Rebecca Silveira has joined our administrative team at the Ferri Middle School as the second Assistant Principal. We welcome her and look forward to her contributions to the Middle School program.
Our central office staff has been working diligently all summer to prepare for our next school year. They are a great team to work with as they truly provide the necessary work to insure our district opens and operates efficiently.
We are continuing to develop our technology program. This year both the high school and middle school will continue to have laptop computers for all students. We also plan to begin to expand our 1:1computer program to the elementary schools. New technology courses will be offered at the high school as well.
Over the summer we have replaced the windows at Barnes Elementary School, upgraded the heating systems at Barnes and Thornton Elementary Schools and are completing work on the upgrade of two more science laboratories at Johnston High School.
Last year, five of our Johnston High School students visited Panni, Italy as exchange students. Panni students will be visiting Johnston at the beginning of this school year for two weeks. We look forward to their visit and we thank our host families for their contributions to this program.
A thank you to our Facilities Director, David Cournoyer and his team of maintenance professionals and custodians. The buildings are looking their best and will be ready to welcome students and teachers back.
Again, school opens for all students on August 30th. Bus schedules will appear in the Johnston Sunrise one week before school opens.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and I look forward to seeing you on August 30th .
