Welcome back to school. Hopefully you are all well rested and have enjoyed quality vacation time over the summer. As we look forward to a new school year, many exciting changes are taking place in our district. It’s been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with all of you and your children as I know you share the goal of creating an exemplary school system and that our students meet high standards. Thank you for your support in making Johnston Schools a community to be proud of. I would also like to thank and commend our School Committee for always placing our students’ best interests at the center of their decisions.
The following are some of the changes taking place in the 2016-2017 school year.
Zachary Farrell, our former high school principal, has taken a position as an Assistant Principal in Cranston. I wish him well in his new district and thank him for his work in Johnston.
Dennis Morrell has accepted the position of Principal at Johnston High School. I know Mr. Morrell will effectively work with the high school faculty, staff, students and families to continuously improve Johnston High School.
Michael Mancieri will be the new Assistant Principal at Johnston High School replacing Francesca Salvadore who has returned to Providence. Mr. Mancieri has experience as an administrator in Middletown. I look forward to his expertise and leadership at Johnston High School.
Matthew Tsonos has been named Interim Principal at Ferri Middle School. Mr. Tsonos has been trained well and is ready to take on the leadership role at the school. He will continue the great work already being done at Ferri.
Robert DiMuccio has moved from the High School to assume the role of Ferri Middle School Assistant Principal. Mr. DiMuccio is an experienced administrator. He will work with another interim Assistant Principal at Ferri.
We look forward to the second year of the full day kindergarten program and the progress our first cohort makes in first grade. Mrs. Zarella, Ms. Souza, the Kindergarten teachers and their staff have made the first year a great success.
I thank all of our administrators, teachers and support professionals for all they do to serve our children. They are the backbone of our schools and focus on our students each and every day.
Our central office staff has been working diligently all summer to prepare for our next school year. They are a great team to work with as they truly provide the necessary work to insure our district operates efficiently.
We are continuing to develop our technology program. This year both the high school and middle school will have laptop computers for all students. We will also be furnishing some elementary classrooms with laptops as we expand our program to that level.
A thank you to our Facilities Director, David Cournoyer and his team of maintenance professionals and custodians. The buildings are looking their best and are ready to welcome students.
School opens for all students on September 1st. Bus schedules will appear in the Johnston Sunrise one week before school opens. We have posted the new school year calendar on our website for your reference.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and I look forward to seeing you on September 1st.
