August 1, 2018

Dear Johnston Students and Families:

Soon we will be welcoming you back to school. Hopefully you are all well rested and have enjoyed quality vacation time over the summer. As we look forward to a new school year, we are planning to continue to offer our students a quality educational experience. It’s been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with all of you and your children. Thank you for your support in making Johnston Schools a community to be proud of. I would also like to thank and commend our School Committee for always placing our students’ best interests at the center of their decisions and our administrators, teachers and staff for the work they do every day as they offer our students instruction to meet the requirements of 21st century skills.

The following is information for the upcoming school year.

  • Please note that students return to school on Wednesday August 29th. There is no school for students on Monday, September 3rd in observance of Labor Day and on Wednesday, September 12th for the Primary elections. Johnston continues to have the traditional February vacation this year. The complete 2018-2019 school calendar can be found on the Johnston Schools Website (www.johnstonschools.org).
  • Jessica Hassel has joined our administrative team as the Assistant Director of Special Services. We welcome her and look forward to her contributions to our special needs programs.
  • Our central office staff and Principals have been working diligently all summer to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year. They are a great team as they truly provide the necessary work to insure our district opens successfully and operates efficiently.
  • The district is finally a complete 1:1 district as every student has access to a Chromebook computer. Technology skills will be offered at all grade levels as well. Many of our teachers are planning blended classrooms to offer students a full range of learning experiences through traditional instruction with embedded technology supports.
  • A thank you to our Facilities Director, David Cournoyer and his team of maintenance professionals and custodians. The buildings are looking their best and will be ready to welcome students and teachers back.
  • If your student has had summer work assigned, please insure that they have completed it before school opens.
  • A key to being a successful student is to attend school every day for the entire school day. Please make every effort to be in school unless there is illness or other emergency.
  • Again, school opens for all students on August 29th. Bus schedules will appear in the Johnston Sunrise one week before school opens.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and I look forward to seeing you on August 29th.

Sincerely,

Bernard DiLullo, Jr.
